What is it?  The GIT is a fun, creative competition between student teams around the world with the goal of promoting innovative solutions to a global problem. It is one of the official activities of the 2009 Global Entrepreneurship Week co-sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation and UnLeashingIdeas.org. The GIT challenge begins when a common, global problem is announced for contestants who will then develop innovative solutions with as much value as possible. Teams must then demonstrate their solution in a three-minute YouTube video for judging locally and globally. Sixty-one universities from 14 countries participated in the 2008 GIT. Participation is expected to grow by 30% in 2009.

Who is coordinating? The Stanford University Technology Ventures Program coordinates the GIT internationally across universities and countries. The RU College of Business & Economics (COBE) is a registered, local partner and student team video submissions will be judged by a panel of RU alumni, civic leaders, and faculty. Shortly afterwards, a separate panel of judges selected by Stanford will then select a global winner from local winners around the world.

Who can participate? Any student officially enrolled at an educational institution in the New River or Roanoke Valley. Maximum team size is 15 members. The teams have a total of eight days (Nov. 4 – 13) to create their YouTube video. All student teams must register with the COBE Dean’s Office before October 30. A registration form can be obtained by downloading it from the COBE website http://cobe-web.asp.radford.edu/git/. A website address will be included in the form about how to register on Stanford’s GIT website as well (required). Please email or return completed form to Ms. Sue Westbrook, sjwestbro@radford.edu , Whitt 135. Registration/participation is free.

Why participate?  Students: Have fun becoming a part of an exciting global event by developing an innovative solution to a global problem. Add to your online portfolio for employers or graduate school. Win global recognition and awards for your student organization, your major, and yourself. Faculty: Provide a highly relevant, experiential learning experience in your class. Coach students in applying their knowledge to practical issues they will face in society. GIT supports RU’s 7-17 vision of innovative thinking, globalization, and experiential learning.

What are the judging criteria?  Just like in real life and true entrepreneurial environments, there are many ways to define value, and measurement is very subjective. We are not defining strict judging criteria for local organizers.  The criteria will be at the discretion of the local and global judges. One guideline we are offering is to give more weight to projects in which teams actually implement their ideas rather than simply talk about their ideas.

What are the categories of GIT Awards?  The first category is Type-of-Team: Independent or representing an RU Student Organization  The second category is based on video content and quality and examples of these can be seen by viewing the 2008 GIT Winners at:  http://eweek.stanford.edu/global2008/recognition_global.html
