RU Collegiate Entrepreneurs
Organization Honored
RU's Collegiate Entrepreneurs organization won first-place
honors and a $200 prize in the "Best Fundraising Idea/Event"
contest at the recent national Collegiate Entrepreneurs
Organization (CEO) conference in Chicago. The prize was
awarded for the Radford CEO's line of personalized leather
portfolios.
Four RU Collegiate CEO members -- Matt Baines, Marc
Capistrant, Nanyamka Edwards and Brian Putt -- attended the
conference for aspiring entrepreneurs. CEO is an
entrepreneurship network with chapters on 165 university
campuses. Its mission is to inspire college students to be
entrepreneurial and seek opportunity through enterprise
creation. Putt participated in the CEO elevator pitch
contest, and Baines entered the CEO essay contest on
"Shadowing an Entrepreneur."

NRV Medical Center President Discusses Health Care and
Competition with COBE Faculty and Students
Don
Halliwill, President, New River Valley Medical Center,
provided some perspective on the policy and legislative
issues involved in today's health care debate to students
and faculty in RU's College of Business and Economics (COBE)
on Nov. 16, 2009. Halliwill spoke to two upper-level
business classes and met with the COBE faculty for a series
of discussions on health care reform and competition in the

RU 2009 Global Innovation Tournament Winners Announced

Students
participated in the Fed Challenge, Monday, October 26, 2009
in Richmond, accompanied by Dr. Alex Orlov, at the Federal
reserve Bank of Richmond. Groups who place go on to the next
level. Maurice Carter, President of the ESA notes: “We hope
to participate in this contest next year, it was a great
learning experience for us and will be very beneficial to us
next year”.

Professional fashion consultants Marcus Morris of Joseph A.
Bank Clothiers, and Lisa Taylor of Talbots gave a
presentation on professional dress in the work place on
October the 22nd in Heth Hall. The program was put on by the
Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business
fraternity. A key theme of the presentation was to purchase
pieces for your wardrobe that are versatile and can be mixed
and matched with each other to create a myriad of outfits. |

economist with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) guest
speaks in Global Economy and Business class
A senior
economist with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mrs.
Carol Fisher was a guest speaker in Dr. Toh's Global Economy
and Business class joined by members of the Radford Economic
Student Association on October 12. Mrs. Fisher has been with
the IMF for 26 years and prior to joining the IMF she was
with the U.S. Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve
Board. At the IMF she has carried out economic missions in
more than 30 countries in West Africa, Latin America, the
Caribbean, and Eastern Europe. In addition to sharing her
first-hand knowledge of how the IMF operates, its goals,
objectives, and challenges, she discussed the new role for
the IMF following the recent G-20 Summit. |

Economics Professor Basel Saleh Featured on the With Good
Reason Radio Program
Dr. Saleh
discussed his research into the socioeconomic indicators
focused on suicide militants in the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. Saleh was quoted and his study was cited in a

Consultant with Infodom, an IT provider based in Zagreb,

Gilbert is pictured with COBE alumni during the Lacrosse
Alumni Reunion held on Alumni Welcome Back Weekend, Oct 3,
2009. Graduate dates ranged from 1979-1999. More than half
of the alumni players were College of Business and Economics
graduates. No major injuries and a lot of fun was had by all.

Receives Scholarship from Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia
Society of Certified Public Accountants
Rafael
Rodriguez-Santos received a $500 scholarship from the
Roanoke chapter, Virginia Society of Certified Public
Accountants. The Roanoke chapter offered four $500
Scholarships and a $1500 scholarship. Each school was
able to put forth two candidates for the scholarships. Other
Schools who participated in the annual event were Ferrum
College, Virginia Tech, Roanoke College, and others. The
presentation was made at the annual Student Night Event.
This is the 6th year RU has participated. Twenty six
RU Accounting students attended, representing the largest
number of attendees from the participating schools. The
event was held September 24, 2009 at Schaal's Metamorphosis
restaurant in Roanoke, VA. |

AFBL Department hosted its 3rd annual
FIRM NIGHT on September
17, 2009
Representatives from nine firms attended the event. Our
seniors met with the firm representatives from 6:00 to 7:00,
providing resumes and exchanging information. From 7:00 to
8:00 our other majors attended to meet the representatives,
discuss career alternatives, and to possibly gain
information about internships. It was once again
a successful event, and we thank all who attended and

Chase
named "Super CPA" by Virginia Business Magazine
Dr. Bruce Chase, professor of accounting, was named
to the "Super CPA" list in the educator category by
Virginia Business magazine. Chase's recognition as a
Super CPA in the educator category is his second in the last
four years and is the result of a poll of more than 7,000
ballots distributed to members of the VPSCA.

Holds Annual Faculty/Staff Picnic
On a beautiful Saturday, Sept. 12, the staff and faculty
gathered at Radford's Bisset Park to eat hot dogs, share
stores and have a good time. The children (and mascot!)
enjoyed the playground, toss game and prizes. The food was
great, especially all the different varieties of brownies we
had!! Thank you to everyone who came and had a great time.

CEO
of Cassaday and Co. Speaks at RU
Mr. Stephen Cassaday, CEO of Cassaday and Co., an award
winning investment firm, spoke to over 125 students at the
Bonnie Auditorium on Sept. 10, 2009. Mr. Cassaday, a 1976 RU
alum, talked on the Pillars of Success. His points included:
set a goal, get advice from others, work hard, maintain
ethics, make the ‘right’ decisions even if you have to
suffer consequences in that decision, use the standard ‘what
would an honest, moral ethical person do?’, give back. Many
students had a chance to speak with Mr. Cassaday after the

Building Event For Students
Radford University’s College of Business and
Economics (COBE) hosted the first ‘Experience Business
Casually’ career development event for RU Students on Friday,
Sept. 11 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Whitt Hall Lawn. The event
featured alumni, recruiters and friends
of the RU COBE providing feedback to RU students on their

Jamison To Speak At Professional Development Workshop
RU's Bruce Chase and Elizabeth Jamison will be among featured
speakers at the Professional Development Workshop co-hosted by
the Roanoke chapter of the Association of Government Accountants
(AGA) and the Government and Non-Profit Assistance Center (GNAC).
The workshop begins at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27 in Room
608 at the Roanoke Higher Education Center.

The Radford University

Business Administration Program were recognized as leaders in
“Student Opinion Honors” by the Princeton Review‘s latest
edition of its college guidebook. COBE and the MBA program were
identified by survey respondents as offering superlative

Finds National Success in Fitness Website - May 2009
In May 2008, Lee
Bradshaw, a recent Radford University marketing graduate
from Roanoke, and Virginia Tech student Wade Hammes launched one
of the first area websites dedicated to fitness information.
Today, that website known as
FITnoke.com has been dubbed “the Internet’s first big step
in the cohesion of fitness and social networking” by Yahoo!

Economic Education Hosts Workshop - April 2009
Teachers from across the region recently
gathered at Radford University to attend a Federal Reserve
workshop hosted by RU’s Center for Economic Education.
Richmond Federal Reserve Bank representatives Amanda Gibson,
Lis Turner and John Walter conducted the daylong workshop,
which introduced teachers to federal resources used for
teaching topics related to the history of the banking

annual entrepreneurial summit, which was hosted by SunTrust,
RU’s College of Business and Economics, and RU Collegiate
Entrepreneurs, was held Monday, Oct. 27-Tuesday, Oct. 28. The
mission of the summit was to provide entrepreneurial-minded
students the ability to learn from successful executives and
entrepreneurs.

Jamison Named as New Director of MBA Program
Elizabeth
Jamison,
who formerly served as the
director of RU’s Leadership
Development Center, has been
named as the new
director of the Master of
Business Administration
program. Jamison will
oversee various changes to
the graduate program,
including the move from a
30-hour credit program to a
36-hour program. There will
also be a change in the
number of prerequisites,
which will be reduced from
nine to four courses.
